Carbon footprint of booze

Awesome. Thanks, Mother Jones. Now we can feel eco-guilt for drinking, too. I didn't know that vodka is the most energy-intensive booze to manufacture, or that tons of pesticides are used on agave plants.

Some tips:

  • For beer...Kegs > cans > bottles
  • Organic when possible
  • Reduce shipping distance
    • See the line on the map shown at the bottom of the article for when to buy CA wine, when to buy Euro-wine (Notably, Chile and Australia aren't even mentioned)

I love that she's getting slammed by new yorkers. NYS wines (and their Ontario counterparts) have come a long way. The local distilleries are fabulous, too.

And the agave thing? Totally part of my anti-agave syrup rant (along with the chemical refining process and extremely high fructose content, both of which render it pretty darn close to HFCS) (and yes, most agave syrup being sold as such is certified organic, but a crop that requires high inputs of conventional pesticides will require an even higher input of organic pesticides and even the organic ones aren't benign)
