Job news continued

Ok, so I was quite excited & 85% sure that I was going to take the job in San Diego.

I just had an interview today that went really well. Right here in San Francisco. I'd likely be able to live on the pay (rumored because I know a few of the other applicants) and it sounds interesting. Work would be with a government institution, which has it's pros and cons. Definite potential for work to continue some into the fall and I offered the idea of a part-time job in the fall...which wasn't shot down.

So, I told them I needed to know tomorrow. Not that much of a bitchy move b/c I'm the last interviewee and they'd like to get this done ASAP.

We shall see. I am off to do my pros/cons list... which is really tough, not having this other offer in hand!

End of the semester & job news

Hurray! I am half done with my MBA degree. Boo! I'm now an unemployed, out of school student. Who is desperately looking for a job. It'd be awesome if I decided "I'm going to take the summer off and travel." But I didn't. I've been spending much of this spring doing the job search.

I finally got an offer.

To a job that I was super excited about when I interviewed in April. In fact, after the interview, I hung up (at least, I hope I did - sometimes bluetooth technology is a little, uh, slow on the hang up) and yelled something to the extent of "I am a fucking genius." Yeah, the interview went well. The interviewer/potential future boss and I totally hit it off. It's for a sustainable energy non-profit in San Diego. I wanted to leave the Bay Area for the summer. And I think I'm going to eventually find my career in renewable energy. And I've never worked for a non-profit and would like to see what that's all about. Sweet, right? Marketing stuff, working with the California Solar Initiative, consumer outreach.

The problem? The pay. We're talking just over minimum wage.

But I'm in school so I can eventually have a job that relates to what I care about. So I'm leaning towards taking it. I'm really excited about it. Plus it'd be great to live with my sister. And a friend of mine down there is talking about learning to surf over the summer. Of course, this means moving AGAIN... and again when I come back up to San Francisco again for school. But so it goes.

OOOORRRRR... I wait and hope that one of these other jobs in the SF area pans out. Oh, and if I get a job in SF, then I could work on making that translate into a part time job during the school year. Which would be ideal.

But seriously, people. The waiting? It sucks. I'd love to be enjoying this mini break, but I can't because I'm super stressed (well, aside from a road bike ride yesterdayfollowed by dinner & American Idol with friends and a planned mtn bike for today).

So, do I take it? Suck it up and dip into my savings this summer, knowing that it will bring me closer to having to take out a personal loan sometime during the next school year? Because I think I'd really enjoy the work.

*sigh*

The timeline... The job in SD wants me to start June 1. I'm currently only locked into my apt here through June 1, so that's perfect. I could extend my lease a few weeks if I want to. I do not know that I can push the start date out past June 1 though - nor do I know that I want to... it's only ~ 2.5 months of work anyway. But I could ask.

So please, comment, my friends. Comment and propose additional questions.

Big hugs to you all.

Gratitude

I started a new practice in March that has been really helpful for me. I have a gratitude journal. It is a different practice from my regular journal, which gets used mostly when I am feeling more negative - sad, angry, frustrated. Instead, I try to write in my gratitude journal every day. I write something positive. My daily practice is generally very simple. One phrase or sentence.

My gratitude journal was initially started because I was feeling very down - and I knew that I actually have a lot to be very thankful for, if I just thought about it. I wonder if after some time (it's only been three months now) I'll be able to find some themes that will help guide me towards "what I really, really want."

Some samples of my journal...
I am grateful for conversation.
I am grateful that my sister is happy.
I am grateful for my friends. They are wonderful and I could not be doing anything without them right now.
I am grateful for good food.
I am grateful that I feel independent! I took my first solo bus ride all the way across the city!
I am grateful for solitude.
I am grateful for the colors of the sunset. And the view that I have of my living room of the sunset. And walking to the beach to see the sunset into the water.
I am grateful for biking with friends.
I am grateful for the ocean. It is a calming force on a difficult day.
I am grateful for the smell of clean laundry.
I am grateful for my ability to speak in front of a group of people.
I am grateful for the renewal and growth of springtime.
I am grateful that Ifeel like I belong.
I am grateful for my physical endurance. I got lost today and a 30 minute run turned into 2h30min.
I am grateful for my Mom.
I am grateful for really, really good sleep.
I am grateful for the kindness of strangers.
I am grateful for my own ballsy-ness.
I am grateful for music and dancing.
I am grateful for the beautiful flowers on my walk to the coffee shop.

Responses to my fans ;)

In response to some comments on my previous post... btw, I looooooove getting comments. Makes me happy to see that my friends are reading this.

Still don't know where I'll be for the summer. Hope to know by early next week. Illinois is looking less likely, as I have two job opportunities that are both looking promising. Of course, no offer letters yet... But think good thoughts on Friday at 2pm CST - I've got a BIG interview then.

The guy on the plane was a little more robust (in a fit old man sort of way, as opposed to frail) looking than Ross Perot. And didn't have big ears. He did have glasses. And used to be a scientist at Lawrence Livermore Labs. No crazy Einstein hair, though.

And I DID get out yesterday! I hadn't exercised since last Monday - unless running around the mall in search of the perfect dress and shoes counts as exercise. My knees were starting to bug me and I couldn't focus... so I went for a run. It was great & I feel a lot better today. Well, maybe not so much the calves. There's a section of 123 stairs on a trail near my house. I decided to go up it a total of four times. Yeah... thems are some sore calves.

And some knowledge...
We're talking about globalization in my Macroeconomics course and needed to discuss a recent article. I found this little article about the G8 summit - http://www.eux.tv/article.aspx?articleId=7793. Here's what I said:

In economics terms, it is very easy to forget about the "other" dimension of sustainability - the social, or people aspect. The article "G8 ministers to do more for social aspect of globalization," from EUX.TV discusses how there are plans to incorporate more social benefits to globalization.

The article mentions social aspects such as security, more and better jobs, CSR and "improving social protection systems" in developing economies. There is not a definition of a "better" job, but when tied with CSR, we can hope that this means safe, and at least minimally satisfying, work.

The EU Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs, Vladimir Spidla also pointed out that social benefits do not appear out of nowhere. They have to be deliberately included in the discussion and industry must go beyond legal mandates to help improve education, social issues and environmental regulations.

This whole concept is called "globalization," but what was also clear from reading this article, is that it's not really "global." There are definitely key players - the G8 members (US, Japan, Canada, France, Italy, Britain and Russia) were specifically called out. According to Wikipedia, these eight countries represent 65% of the world's economy.

From a social sustainability perspective, it seems like the ROW not included in the G8 is the group that should be most interested in getting the G8 on board with social responsibility - just as the G8 holds the majority of the economy, the non-G8 holds the majority of the people - the people most affected by decisions made by the G8.

May 8th?!? Really?

I do not believe it is already the second week of May. This is insanity.

Just back from a visiting my family in Illinois. I was there for about a week... seems long with respect to the amount of catch-up I need to do now with school, but seemed very short while I was there. I spent all my time with family and didn't really get to see friends. Kind of sucks, but I'll have to schedule some visits next time I'm in town.

I was in Illinois for my cousin's wedding, which was a the Chicago History Museum. Very pretty space, great location. Fun was definitely had by all. I managed to tire out my 10 year old cousin with my crazy dancing. :)

Congratulations to the new husband and wife!

Met a very cute old man on the plane back last night. He had a French workbook - kind of like what you'd use your freshman year of high school, and a tape player. He was teaching himself French in preparation for an upcoming visit. Sooo cute. Even better was when he talked about how his wife was learning Spanish - so they'd both be useful. Awwww.

I am stuck inside doing massive amounts of school work. I like being in school, but man. It is supposed to be 85+ degrees F today. In San Francisco. I live near the beach, for crying out loud. I wanna play outside!!! Must be productive...

Idiot in San Diego stole my sister's clothes.

Ok, three posts in one day is a bit much. But I've got a lot to do so I'm feeling overwhelmed... and so I procrastinate. I'm really going to get to work after this one.

But really, why did someone steal my sister's clothes from the dryer in her apartment building? My sister is a size 0 for crying out loud. YOU CAN'T WEAR HER CLOTHES! Oh, maybe you wanted the one exception to that? One of our dad's old tshirts that she wore for good luck during finals? Yeah, that was in there. You really wanted that one, huh?

Yeah, buddy, you're a real class act. Why don't you grow a pair and buy your own clothes? What you're going to make money off of this? Take her stuff to Buffalo Exchange or something?

AUGH.
